Best of luck guys! - Emily Correa

1: Who are you as an artist? What is your story?

Mick: I formed the band with ex-member (Vince Iannotti) 6 years ago being long-time friends and musicians, originally coming up with the band name ‘Slightly Left of Centre’ (SLC) to be different than other musical acts as one of our biggest achievement to date is that we self-pen all music and videos. We’ve been in the music industry as an artist, event manager, music producer and coordinator. Adam and I have been fortunate in the industry having developing SLC from the ground up and redefying a sound that is organic and appealing to the masses.

2: Who are some of your favorite artists and music influences?

Anything that remotely has a sound vibration is an influence… haha but in all seriousness, we have an extensive range of influences such as pop, rock, funk, metal, jazz and country.

3: What is makes your music worth it? To the world? To the fans?

Our music offers a lot of different styles hence the band name ‘Slightly Left of Centre’, being different than the norm. Offering music fans an opportunity to watch a band evolve with so many influences and styles.

4: What is the future of music and the music industry?

The industry has change dramatically over the years with samples and many different avenues for bands to make a sustainable living. I feel the approach we take as a band is to gain a social following and get new fans on our side by joining our personal mailing list (via official website) as we do send exclusive content and people get to know who we are and what we do for a living.

5: What surprises you the most about the music industry?

The music industry itself surprises us as there are so many changes that we as an artist adapt having experimenting with different electronic/organic samples in our music and always keeping up to date with the latest musical tools to assist with the songwriting process.

6: What's your poison?

To be honest I've never thought of ingesting it before... hehe ?

Adam: Glass or wine, or a bottle of jack! Mick: I occasionally have a drink of ouzo now and then, apart from that it’s clean living for me.

7: How is Art "Your Religion"?

Adam: When I was 13 my older sister told me that some bands are making millions of dollars. This then inspired me to form a hip-hop group with a friend of mine. It went from there, I picked up the guitar and joined a few punk & metal bands before realizing I wanted to continue playing in bands for the rest of my life!

Mick: My grandfather and Johnny Cash (RIP) I use to write letters back and forth to the man in black himself before he passed away, such a talented country songwriter that will never be forgotten. Still till this day I feel privileged that I actually had the chance to exchange letters between him and his management. Thanks Mr. Cash for giving me inspiration!

8. What are you truly creating with your music that changes the world, changes society?

We are creating music for masses, also keeping our element of fun and love for music! Over the years SLC has grown internationally and we couldn’t be more happier as there are so many different countries we want to play live as a thank to all fans who’ve supported what we do.

9. What is the message of your music?

We promote love, nothing more.

10. Have you been “lucky” or “gifted” in the music industry so far? Tell us more:

We have been very fortunate to get SLC at a point where it can be easily managed and sustainable for us to push this into overtime as a full-time job. It has be a crazy journey so far and one of the reasons why we love interviews is so readers have an insight to the commitment and experiences that make a band stronger.

We have awesome labels (Tabletop Records/Spectra Music Group) who’ve backed what SLC is all about, let alone working with Elixir Strings (USA) for all our string instrumentals and now further collaborating with an animator in Texas, USA.

SLC has helped us as musicians network with so many people overseas, we recommend anyone in a band to always push your music and boundaries as everything is limitless!

11. What do you really think it takes to make it in the music industry? Tell us 3 keys.

Adam: G major, B# atonal & especially A harmonic minor!!! (Sorry, but Adam (aka “Adz”) likes to crack a joke now and then)

Mick: I think the 3 keys are:

Determination: A lot of determination is required not only to be a musician but to have motivation for whatever is thrown your way musically. A good example is the willingness to learn about music production, step out of your comfort zone and learn new tools to help you progress with your music. E.g.: produce/film your own music videos.

Skills: It’s always great to obtain a palette of skills that you’d consciously perfect as time goes on. I know it may be silly but it’s just like working a day-time job. You learn new processes all the time, so why shouldn’t you look at the positive and apply that to your music.

Promotion: The music industry will never throw you an easy option, you have to make your options and find ways of self-promoting and branding. Ideally, paying for press releases and labels backing you can help but there has never been a day in our lives where we’d just sit back and let someone else take care of business. It’s important to be involved in all aspects as this is what makes you a stronger musician than the rest.

12. What is your main inspirational philosophy in life? Favorite quote?

Mick: I generally work towards a common goal and think back to why I started making music, and most importantly trying to make that dream a reality.

I always put this in my head

“Each day, we need to push music and make it financially sustainable so we don’t have to go back to working for a company.”

13. What do you regret most in your music and would have done differently?

Adam: I regret not going back in time, way before Boz Scaggs, so I could steal all his hits before he had the chance to write them himself

Mick: I regret probably not starting music earlier in my career. I mean music was always there for me and I use to write letters back and forth to Johnny Cash but I guess it would’ve been a benefit to go guitar lessons earlier in life.

14. Where do you see your career going in 5 years? 10 years?

Adam: Mick & I are going to keep the train rolling forever, we want to tour the world, visit every city we possibly can, build the support base, and continue to get our music out there to the world!

Mick: Sustainability, we both work day jobs to pay the bills and way in the music industry with releases, mastering and press releases. Till the end of time I’ll keep pushing SLC till I have it fully sustainable as a full-time job.

15. Legacy: At the end of the day, how do you want your fans to remember you and your music?

We’re making music to be remembered. Fans will remember SLC as a band that always pushed the boundaries, self-produced music and videos, collaborated with awesome animators and working with celebrities who’ve help us pen the band name internationally!
