Exclusive Interview with our ReverbNation Winner, Africa’s Folasade Yumi!

1. Age and how long in the industry? How is the music scene in your area?

Well let’s say since 2015 even though I had 2 songs and a video released before then, but I like to say 2015 was when I said to myself ‘Sade ok now are you doing this? or ARE YOU DOING THIS?’. So yes 2015 is the year. Although I am Nigerian, I live in Cotonou, which is the capital of Benin Republic, it’s the heart of anything and everything in the country when it comes to entertainment and it’s kind of bubbly depending on the period of the year. When I’m in Lagos the scene is intensely lively and colorful.

2. Let's have some fun! What's your Zodiac Sign?

Grrrrr, hear me roar I’m a proud Leo. Birthday August 18 th .

3. What is your main inspirational philosophy in life? Favorite quote and why?

I don’t really have a main inspirational philosophy I have many depending on the situation I’m facing. Let’s say ‘Don’t give up’ ‘Believe in yourself’ ‘Dream big, work harder’ are on the top list.

4. Ok, now...who are YOU as an artist? What is your story?

I love to sing and write for as long as I can remember. Music is my escape place, writing is therapeutical to me. I don’t put all I write into my music, most I keep for myself friends and family. As an artist I stay true to myself and try to make my music make sense. It can be tricky cause here everybody just wants to dance and little attention is paid to lyrics. Mostly my music is that of a young African lady promoting positive messages, independence and empowerment. I like to say my music is about the life experience of an independent African lady working hard to make her dreams come true while having fun at it.

5. Who are your musical influences and what genre of music would you say your style is?

Music influences are Alicia keys, Sade Adu, Jhené Aiko, Tiwa Savage, Ashanti, Whitney Houston, Yemi Alade, Rihanna, Beyoncé etc. I don’t really think I have a particular style; I am into anything that connects with me. If you listen to ARIES THE EP you will understand better. I get into a universe, I like it, I do my thing. I don’t want my sound to be put into a category, music gets boring to me that way.

6. What is the state of the music industry right now? Where is it going?

The music industry in Africa is doing very well, I mean in big cities, some artists are breaking boundaries and paving the way for others. The likes of Wizkid, Davido, Mr Eazi, Tiwa, Burnaboy, Yemi, Tekno, Nasty C, Casper Nyovest, Vanessa Mdee and many others are blowing things up. I think afro pop and other afro related sounds are the future.

7. How is your Art “your Religion”?

My music is my religion because it gives me purpose. Songwriting, singing, learning new musical skills give me LIFE.

8. What are you truly creating with your music that changes the world, changes society?

I don’t know if I have the ability to do that. But I believe if by being true to myself and putting that truth in mymusic in an industry where it seems everybody is playing a character; can inspire anyone to be unapologetically themselves and not be boxed into the stereotypes society has of them is possible, then it’s all good!

9. What is the spiritual, political or social message of your music?

Hope, Love, woman empowerment / independence, Fun.

10. What do you really think it takes to make it in the music industry? Tell us 3 keys.

Talent/Creativity, Money, Connections/Perseverance.

11. Where do you see your career going in 2019?

I see myself growing as an artist, exploring more, being consistent, putting out more music and if possible my first album.

12. Legacy: At the end of the day, how do you want your fans to remember you and your music?

I want my fans to remember me as a person who didn’t give up on herself and on her dreams, I want my music to be remembered as a reflection of my true self and experiences. I want to be remembered for my passion as an artist.
